The Je Suis Path

A woman fully at ease and at home in herself, calm and quietly radiant - a life lived as her own.

Embody: What It Means to Feel at Home in Your Own Skin

August 25, 20267 min read

There is a version of this final stage you might be expecting - the one where you arrive. Where the work is finished, the doubt is gone, and you become, at last, permanently and unshakably yourself.

I want to give you the truer version, because it is so much kinder.

Embody is the fifth and final stage of the JE SUIS PATH, and it is where the woman you once had to practice being simply becomes the woman you are. Not perfectly. Not permanently. But naturally, the way a language you once studied word by word eventually becomes the one you think in. You are no longer performing her. You are no longer straining to become her. You are simply, quietly, her.

And here is the part almost no one tells you: embodying yourself does not mean you never lose your way again.

I still fall off the wagon. After all these years, all this remembering and reclaiming and creating, I still catch myself living a few days that aren’t quite mine, slipping back into old habits, old people-pleasing, the old noise. We are creatures of habit, and the old habits are patient. They wait.

What has changed is not that I stopped falling. It is how quickly I get back up.

That, for me, is what steadiness actually feels like, and it is a little counter-intuitive given everything this stage is supposed to be about. Steadiness is not a straight, unbroken line. It is noticing, quickly, the moment I have drifted from my authentic life, knowing exactly what to do to turn it around, and then turning it around almost immediately. I still fall off the wagon. I simply spend far less time off of it before I climb back on.

That is self-trust in its most mature form. Not the absence of doubt, but a shortened distance between losing yourself and finding your way home. The doubt still visits, that quiet “who am I to do this?” I have carried since long before any of this began. I no longer fight it. I acknowledge it, I accept that it is there, and then I reach for my tools and get back on the wagon. The visit gets a little shorter every time.

So what are the tools? Mine are simple, and they are everything: my planners and my journals.

All along this path, I documented the work. What I was learning, what I was releasing, who I was becoming. And I return to them, regularly, the way you would return to a well. The truth is that the work of clearing the noise is almost always a no-brainer, because I already know exactly what I need to do. But knowing and remembering are two different things. Some days my mind simply is not at its best, and I lose sight of my own common sense. Reviewing my planners, and updating them, keeps me on my path even when I have quietly wandered off of it.

There is a devotion in that return. Not a grand, dramatic devotion, but a small and faithful one: the practice of coming back to yourself on the most ordinary days, again and again, until coming back is simply what you do.

Because that is the other thing I have learned about embodiment. You feel it far more than you can explain it.

The French have a phrase I have loved for as long as I can remember: bien dans sa peau. To be well in your own skin. That is the closest I can come to describing this stage. You know you are living an authentic life when you feel good in your mind, your body, and your soul, when you cannot quite put it into words, but everything simply feels right. It is not worth the energy to try to describe it precisely. You will feel it. And, just as surely, you will feel it when it is off. That “off” feeling is not a failure. It is your own compass, still working perfectly, telling you it is time to return to the well.

I know the exact moment I understood I had crossed over from becoming her to simply being her. And it is my favorite story on this whole path.

When I first began, I did something that might sound strange, but turned out to be the truest thing I have ever done. I could not yet be the woman I longed to become, so I invented her. I gave her every quality I wanted and did not yet have, and I gave her a name: La Buddhiste Française, a little marriage of the two loves that have always felt most like me, Buddhism and all things French. She was who I wanted to be. I could not yet be her, but I could study her, and I could emulate her.

For years, so many years, my planner theme was always the same: to live the life of La Buddhiste Française. I would list how she lived. How she moved through her days, what she gave her attention to, how she carried herself. And then I would work those lists, one item at a time, quietly folding them into my own life.

And then, partway through a recent year, something amazing happened.

I bought a brand-new journal in the very middle of the year. I did not need to, but I could not help it, because I had realized I no longer needed her. After all those years, I had finally become La Buddhiste Française. There was nothing left to emulate. The woman I had been reaching toward and the woman living my life had quietly become the same person. I did not need a persona anymore, because I was her.

That was the moment I went from emulating La Buddhiste Française to embodying JE SUIS JEANETTE. From reaching for a life to living it. From “I want to be her” to Je suis. I am.

Now look back with me, all the way to the beginning.

In the very first stage, Awaken, I told you about a younger woman who had built herself out of magazines, a collage of everyone else’s ideas about who she was supposed to be, a size 10 quietly trying to wear a size 6. Notice what happened across this path. She stopped assembling herself from other people’s scripts. She authored her own ideal instead. And then, most beautiful of all, she grew so fully into that ideal that she no longer needed it held up in front of her. The scaffolding came down, and the woman was simply there.

That is the whole path, in one arc. Awaken, Remember, Reclaim, Create, Embody. It was never a ladder you climb once and leave behind. It is a circle you will walk again and again, noticing, remembering, reclaiming, creating, embodying, each time a little more quickly, each time a little more yourself.

You will still fall off the wagon. So will I. The measure was never whether you drift. It is how gently, and how quickly, you come home. And you always, always know the way.

Je suis. I am.

And now, so are you.

THE JOURNAL WHERE I BECAME HER

For years, my planner theme was always the same: to live the life of La Buddhiste Française, the woman I longed to become. Then, partway through a recent year, I bought a brand-new journal in the middle of the year, one I didn’t need, because something had shifted: I had become her. The first month held a 30-day challenge, and this is the one I set for myself. Under “I want to make this happen because,” I wrote the truest sentences I own.

My challenge: embrace JE SUIS JEANETTE.

“I know who I am and what I’m doing. I know what makes me happy and what makes me feel better. And I know the trajectory of who I want to evolve into. I just need to do it.”
